 Bears the Real Deal

Willagee Bears continued their 2013 form beating last year’s premiers North Beach Sea Eagles 30 to 26 in a hard fought and close game. After being just behind at half time at 18 to 20 they scored two quick tries early in the second half to hold on for the win. North Beach was able to get it back to a four point game but could not get enough momentum to break through.

The teams went try for try for most of the game, but it was the forwards for Willagee that kept the pressure up for the home side. Rhys Peakman led what was a team effort for the Bears with Keiran Tarrant the best for North Beach.

The Bears now go into the final game of the round against Fremantle Roosters in a top of the table clash with both sides on four wins. It has been a remarkable turnaround for the Willagee and a great boost for the competition.

Fremantle Roosters won their game against Rockingham Sharks in a high scoring game 42 to 30. The Roosters scored on the bell of half time to have a 22 to 18 lead, but were never able to really shake off the Sharks.

Penalties again played a part in the game and the flow of play was affected. Best for Fremantle was Keiran Anthony with Josh Simm the best for the Sharks. SG Ball debutant Keelyn Tuuta-Edwards was also in the best for Rockingham.

South Perth Lions won a tight game 28 to 14 against Joondalup Giants and only blew out the score late in the second half scoring two tries 25 minutes into the half and another on the siren. Joondalup had many chances to take the lead but could not complete a set when they had the opportunity in the second half.

The coaches from both sides were critical of their own completion rate.

“We were down some key players, but at the end of the day we held on for the win”, said a relieved Nathan Johnson of South Perth.

Joondalup’s Brad Costello rued another lost chance. “It is very frustrating that our completion rate and silly mistakes cost us this game and has let us down this season”.

Taka Peneha was best on ground for the Lions with Clint Fraser the Giants best.
