Karratha Junior Rugby League President Nic Rolle is hopeful this weekend’s North West Reds Championships will put the club in good stead to host the 2020 Junior State Championships.

Teams from Karratha, Broome and South Hedland will descend on Karratha Leisureplex for the two-day tournament between 4-5 August, with players vying for spots in the North West Reds side for the 2019 JSC.

“This is just part of the progression for the North West Reds area to keep the growth up and a trial run for hosting the 2020 event,” Rolle said.

“This is bringing everyone together from all these different regions just to basically compete and at this level pick out teams for Junior State Championships.”

With the WA rugby league community’s eyes on Karratha for the next two days, Rolle says it’s a great opportunity to grow the game in the North West.

“It’s great for us up here,” Rolle said.

“It just helps with our pathways direction along with being able to see all the talents from the regions together and be able to compete against each other and play at the next level.”

With three areas currently involved, Rolle hopes expansion is on the table.

“We’d love to be able to get Kimberly Rugby League and Kununurra involved as well,” he said.

“It’s just our growth through our game development level, so growth and expansion – building the game in those areas to be able to compete at the same level.”
