2022 NRL WA Squad Game – Ellenbrook Rabbitohs

The boys from the North East are back. The Ellenbrook Rabbitohs return to the top grade after a two year hiatus. Last time they were in the top competition for a single solitary season, in 2019, where they produced a top 4 finish. But were bundled out in their first ever semi final appearance and then went back down to reserve grade. Continuity is the word at the Rabbitohs, with the club trying to stick around now, but what can we expect from them in 2022?

For the 2022 season the Rabbitohs have called on the experienced John Hough. Responsible for taking the Sea Eagles to the Grand Final in 2018 and 19, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. Having eyed John off for over 12 months now, the Rabbitohs eventually got their man in the off season, and will look to hit the ground running, supported ably by Dave “Blue” Williams, and old hands Baden Turner and Puna Te Runga.

Gains & Losses
Significantly its all gains for the Rabbitohs and as long as the preseason is a success they will consider everything a win. Talented players such as William Ramsay & Charlie Adams have committed to getting back into it, with the line out for some older Bunnies to return such as Bryce Penny and Ethan Reynolds who have had previous first grade experience. Joseph Annan and James Rameka look like coming on board, but the key may lie with the maybes. Names like the Tyrese and Skinny Grey along with Chazz Palmer are proven first graders with recent experience. Time will tell.

Draw Snapshot
No matter what way you look at it, the Rabbitohs are coming from nothing, and any draw will be seen as tough. A big first round matchup down in Port Kennedy against the Sharks in Round 01 will let them know where they stand as a premiership side. A round 02 matchup with the Lions will show them what a 75 year premiership club looks like, as the Lions set the benchmark most years. And a round 03 home opener sees the return of a northern rivalry between the Bunnies and cross town rivals the Giants.

Its hard to see the Rabbitohs truly pushing for a title in 2022, but you never write teams off this early in the season. The main goal of the Bunnies would be to compete and stay in the competition longer than one season this time. Hopefully with some youth coming through and some old heads coming back, they can trouble other sides this year. But if a rash of talent shows up, expect some serious fireworks.
