Harvey Norman Premiership Finals Series Week 3 wrap-up

Roosters end Sharks’ season

Fremantle Roosters ended the Rockingham Sharks’ Grand Final dream winning comfortably 30 to 18 in the Preliminary Final. They will now face up to North Beach Sea Eagles next week to fight it out for the 2012 Harvey Norman Premiership. It will be their first appearance in a Grand Final since the nineties.

The Roosters have been one of the sides to watch this year, and while they stumbled for a few weeks mid-way through the season, they deserve to be in the final with some good form in recent weeks.

Fremantle coach Lee Toon-Poynton did not think it was their best game but was happy for the effort put in.

“The nerves got into the boys during the game, but we did OK”, he said.

The only issue will be a hamstring strain to centre Martin Bartle.

With a 16 to 12 half time lead, Fremantle were able to stay ahead on the score board, but the Sharks were never going to go away, responding with tries when needed. The second half saw the Roosters draw away as the pressure of a long injury list late in the season started to show for the Sharks.

Five-eighth Delane Edwards showed why he is the danger man for Fremantle with two tries and was best afield, he was well backed up by front rower Joe Skipper.

Rockingham’s fullback Brenton Cowen was a stand out for the Sharks, and after his first season in First Grade, can look forward to good seasons ahead.

Martyn Wood, coach of Rockingham was disappointed to go out a week before the Grand Final but knew that the injuries in recent weeks meant it was going to be a tough road. They were definitely the season’s big improvers.

“We had poor discipline today and the defense was not that great,” Wood said.

The Sharks should be proud of what they achieved in 2012, as they came of age as a club and with better luck, could have threatened for the flag.

Next week’s Grand Final will be played between North Beach Sea Eagles and Fremantle Roosters at Charles Riley Reserve in North Beach kicking off at 6pm. It will be the final game of the day of Grand Finals in a format that includes Under 11s through to First Grade
