Jordan Pereira has come a long way since his time in WA.

The former Willagee Bears winger made his NRL debut over the weekend, grabbing a try for the St George Illawarra Dragons in a 24-10 win over the North Queensland Cowboys.

The debut was a long time coming for Pereira, who signed with the Dragons in June 2017 after impressing for the Mackay Cutters.

The 25-year-old made the most of his opportunity, however, and touched down in the 50th minute after getting on the end of Gareth Widdop’s perfectly weighted kick.

“It’s unreal – it’s the best feeling,” he said.

“It wasn’t just putting the ball down, it was the response I got from the boys – they were so happy for me and made me feel like I was part of the team.”

Pereira is no stranger to the try line, and it was in Perth where he made a name for himself – starring for Willagee in the local WA Smarter Than Smoking Premiership.

As a 21-year-old, Pereira won the competition’s leading try scorer, racking up an impressive 19 tries in 2014.

He then earned himself a move over East to play for the Cutters in the Queensland Cup, becoming a mainstay of their lineup before signing with the Dragons in 2017.

Since then, the New Zealand-born flyer has impressed for the Dragons’ Intrust Super Cup side, scoring 16 tries in 2018, including four in one game against the Western Suburbs Magpies in May.

Pereira has been named to start on the wing for the Dragons for their NRL Round 20 clash with the Sydney Roosters where he will line up opposite former New South Wales winger Daniel Tupou.
