Lions to face Sea Eagles in Grand Final

South Perth Lions earned the right to take on North Beach Sea Eagles in next week’s Harvey Norman Premiership Grand Final with an all the way win against Rockingham Sharks winning 32 to 8 in the preliminary final.

The loss would have been hard to take for the Sharks after such a promising season, but one they can take forward with optimism for the future. They again had to play the best part of the game with 12 players after centre Eddie Palelei was sent off at 20 minutes for his second high tackle. It was a tough penalty in the cut throat final and the second time in three weeks for the club.

After going 6 nil up after just the second set of the game, South Perth were well held in the first half by a determined Sharks side and had a 10 nil half time lead.

The Sharks knew they had to jump early in the second to put pressure on the Lions and they threw everything at them but could not break the deadlock. Coach Martyn Wood had fired them up and if one avenue did not get through, they tried another, but the defense of South Perth stood up.

Twelve minutes into the second half and against the flow of play, Hayden Fisher who had been threatening all day broke the line to run the ball up to 20 metres before passing off the Jack Greenwood to get the Lions further ahead.

It was a telling play, and from that time South Perth started to suffocate Rockingham. Eddie Proudler followed soon after with his own break and 50 metre run to score.

Front rower Jon Phipps then stamped his authority on the game as the defense of the Sharks started to tire, creating a try for Michael Guthrie and then going over the line himself.

Late in the game the Sharks pushed over for two tries to James Moala and Ian Wood to restore some pride.

Best players were Phipps and Scott Jones for South Perth and Caleb Reedy and Lee Gudor for the Sharks.

South Perth will now meet North Beach Sea Eagles in a replay of 2010 next Saturday night at 6.00pm at nib Stadium in the Harvey Norman Premiership Grand Final.
