Nine straight for Senior Men

Western Australia are the Combined Affiliate States Champions for a ninth straight year after finishing the three-day tournament with a 2-1 record.

Despite falling to a 15-14 loss to the Northern Territory in their final game, WA took out the title on a countback.

After starting the tournament with a comfortable 54-8 win over a spirited South Australian side, WA were made to work for their 19-6 win over Victoria on Day Two before falling to defeat on the final day.

The boys produced a strong defensive display throughout the tournament, with a tough game against Victoria on Day Two really taking its toll on the bodies.

The loss was WA’s first since 2013 when they were on the reserve end of a 23-12 scoreline against Victoria but still took out the title.

It snapped a run of 15 straight wins for the Senior Men.

Following the tournament, WA were rewarded with 10 players selected to the CAS squad to tour Fiji later this year.

Nathan Searle (Joondalup), Josh Toole (North Beach), Tevita Pomale, Logan Barclay, Andrew Jeffery, Julian Wilson Wyllie (Rockingham Sharks), Eddie Proudler (South Perth Lions), Bjorn Crotty, Brad Gibson and Jordan Stringer (Fremantle Roosters) were named to the squad following strong individual performances.

Only Jeffery and Gibson remain from the 2017 CAS side who played England in a World Cup warm-up game.
