NRLWA Westpac Womens Premiership – Round 04 Recap

A dominant Joondalup Giants, led superbly by Anneka Stephens, looked all class on Friday evening as they grabbed the points in their round four Westpac Women’s premiership 24-12 win over Ellenbrook.

With Kailey Thomson missing from their lineup, the Rabbitohs struggled to contain a vibrant Giants attack early, as Stephens and Topaz Porter stamped their authority on the game.

And after Amiria Edwards and then older sister Chanelle added further scores the home side looked to be coasting to victory.

“First half was good, but we let them back into the game in the second period and that is something  we need to work on,” Giants coach Kurt Lahtz said.

The Bunnies never-say-die attitude helped turn the game on its head after the halftime break as Juraea Turner and Frieda Ah-Sam scored to make the final 20 minutes a real contest.

At 20-12 the game was finely balanced before Amiria Edwards was too strong for a tiring Ellenbrook defensive line, powering her way across on the right edge to score the final try of the night.

Lahtz was pleased to pick up the points but knows there is still plenty of work to do.

“Anneka steered the ship, as she always does, and Amiria is improving with every game,  but it was a pretty ugly performance,” he admitted.

“We’ve lost a couple with injuries and I know we need to be at our best next week against Fremantle if we want this run to continue.”
