The Willagee Bears had an exciting and successful 2024 season. The Bears have been building steadily over the last few years and are looking improve further for 2025 and beyond.
As Vice President, I have had the privilege of working closely with a strong dynamic committee that has welcomed new members and fresh perspectives. At the forefront is our President, Vilai Kelemete, whose leadership qualities have been truly inspiring. Vilai’s vision, energy and innovative approach have really driven the club forward. His ability to bring people together, inspire action and foster a collaborative environment has strengthened our committee and positioned the club for continued success.
Committee recognition. A club cannot run successfully without a cohesive and dedicated committee. A special mention goes to our Club Person of the Year, Tausaga Kelemete, our media delegate, who has taken on multiple roles throughout the season. Kylie Rivers, whose continued support of the club both on and off the field, has been invaluable. Ailaoa Aoina’s unwavering dedication and behind-the-scenes efforts have truly been the backbone of the club for years. Jess Pahina’s cheerful disposition and fresh ideas have been greatly appreciated. Luke Pollock and Steven Bannister have always been ready to lend a hand with the field equipment, storage, and match day set ups. Danielle Parker’s ongoing efforts to increase women’s and girls’ participation are greatly appreciated. Brenda Pittman made essential contributions with events, bookings and fundraising activities. Hohaia Koni as our Junior Delegate officer doing a great job managing the junior team requests. We’d also like to recognise our canteen staff – Emma Hart, Malia Pau’u and Venezza Pritchard – whose hard work, along with a few volunteers helped us successfully finish the season. Finally, to all other members who have helped in some way this year, thank you!
12s Gala Day: The club had the privilege of hosting the 12s Gala Day at Webber Reserve. The day also welcomed Karratha JRL who made the long journey to Perth to compete against the local teams. It was a resounding success, with all teams showcasing impressive skills and playing with outstanding sportsmanship. To cap off the day, the 12s Bears team extended a warm gesture of hospitality by providing food and drinks for the visiting Karratha side – to thank them for making the trip. The club looks forward to the opportunity to hosting again.
Junior teams: Our junior teams had an enjoyable and productive year. The club introduced a new 16s girls team, a star packed side that had an incredible first season. Our non-competition player numbers increased, and our competition grade teams had great success. Special thanks to our amazing coaches for their hard work this year: Story Brandon, Matt Protic, Qiyara Sisepi, Mike Engu-Tavai, Hohaia Koni, Alex Morton, Manuel Koia, Trudy Kinita and all their support crews.
The Bears also celebrated a club record of 20 junior state representatives – a huge achievement. Congratulations to all those representatives on their selection:
- Legend Koro-Hikawera, Tamati Tawhitapou, Tini Sauea, Jacob Smith, Eyzirie Koro, Riro Reihana, Kalani Onno, Elijah Gelling, Tyler Dickie, Elias Tsakalos, Emmelia Prior, Isabella Prior, Palace Koia, Talitha Heta, Kiriwai Nathan, Mere Haerewa, Hinemanu Tutaki, Azariah Cook, Bailey Vasukicakau, Willow Leach.
Junior Finals success: 3 from 3! A great success story for our 14s, 15s and 16s teams all winning their grand finals, congratulations to all players involved! Manuel Koia and Trudy Kinita have worked tirelessly over the years on building and developing their teams, and their efforts have been rewarded with multiple grand final wins. Coaching three teams at once is no small feat, but I believe Manuel’s coaching is one of the best in the junior competition. Reflected by the team accomplishments, the commitment of returning players and new players eager to join his coaching system.
Senior team growth: In 2022, the clubs senior men’s team had to start over, numbers have grown dramatically since. This season we fielded three senior teams: Val Murphy, Third Grade and WLT. In 2025, we aim to fill all senior grades, including First Grade, Val Murphy, Third Grade, WLT, Women’s Tackle and a 19s side! This remarkable growth in just three years is a testament to our welcoming club culture, great coaches, managers and a hardworking committee.
Senior team success: The Women’s League Tag team had a slow start to the season but found their form toward the end with some great wins. Both our senior men’s teams qualified for the finals, the Val Murphy side fell to a strong Alkimos Tigers side in the semi-finals. The Third-Grade side went straight into the Grand Final with their semi-final win but fell just short on the big day.
Sponsorship: The club saw a significant increase in sponsorship this year, particularly through the jersey sponsorship initiative, which will continue in 2025. We extent our heartfelt thanks to our 2024 sponsors:
- Hall & Prior, Skippers Transport, TCML Electrical Contractors, Jojo’s, Mining & Industrial Wholesalers, Strom RCS Roof Solutions, Metro Steel Fabrication WA, Sheridan Funerals, Just Train Be Disciplined, General Crane Services, Parker Clan, Kidsport, City of Melville, NRLWA, Bunnings O’Connor, Len Castle and Social Darts.
Looking ahead, the club aims to keep strengthening its junior numbers, senior numbers and expand sponsorship to ensure long-term sustainability for future seasons.
Kind regards,
Andrew Bannister
