Pirates Claim First Victory for 2015

It’s been a long time coming for the Cash Converters West Coast Pirates to claim their first victory of the 2015 season. It took six rounds of the SG Ball competition for everything to finally stick together for the Pirates as they defeated the Central Coast Centurions 22 – 20 on Saturday 21st March.

After the long trip to the Central Coast, the Pirates started the match slowly and let the Centurions jump out to an early 14 – 0 lead. However the injection of Poinga Biddle and Alec Campbell into the game got the team moving forward in the right direction. Head Coach Ryan Gundry praised the efforts of the two forwards helping turn the team around, “Poinga in particular made some bone jarring hits and some strong runs”.

After the Pirates gathered more possession and a couple of penalties fell their way, the points started to flow for the West Coast boys. Both teams were locked up at the break 14 all.

At the start of the second half, halves Jake Gleeson and Sonny Kerr impressed Gundry, “Jake and Sonny took over; they executed our game plan to put us in front”. However the home team weren’t giving up and they clawed their way back into the lead with 10min left of the clock. However this game the Pirates weren’t going to let them get the win that easy.

“The boys remained composed, built pressure until they couldn’t hold on any longer”, Gundry said. It was at this point that Jake Gleeson danced his way through several defenders to score and give the Pirates a 2 point advantage with minutes remaining in the match. In those final minutes Gundry was impressed by the team’s ability to hold on, “The last 4 minutes were again a show of defiance in defence and it really showed how far we have come since round 1”.

The Pirates played well as a team, although the stand out performances came from Poinga Biddle, Liam Donelly, Alec Campbell and Jake Gleeson.

The hard work from Head Coach Ryan Gundry and his team of support staff and players has finally paid off. Everyone in the Rugby League community is extremely proud of the efforts all the entire squad and staff.

The Cash Converters Pirates match up against North Sydney Bears on Saturday 28th March at Charles Riley Reserve. Kick-off is 11am, let’s show our support for the West Coast boys and cheer them to victory this weekend.
