WA State coach Darren Shaw has been appointed the head coach of the Combined Affiliated States (CAS) squad for the 2019 CAS tour, NRL WA can announce.
Shaw, who led WA to the 2018 CAS title will lead the best players from Victoria, Northern Territory, South Australia and WA during a seven-day tour to Sydney in October.
“I can’t wait for this fantastic opportunity,” Shaw said.
“This is definitely something that ticks a box for me.”
A former Rockingham Sharks WA Smarter Than Smoking Premiership coach, Shaw says he is up for the challenge.
“We’ll get a lot of work done prior and we’ll make sure we get our preparation right,” he said.
“We’re just ready to go.”
The CAS side includes ten WA players, with Josh Benjamin, Trent Trotter, Brad Sharpham, Ben Taylor, Brad Gibson, Bjorn Crotty, Delane Edwards, Eddie Proudler, Logan Barclay and Nathan Searle all earning selection after impressing at June’s CAS Championships.
The team will play two games against a Newcastle Country Rugby League representative side and Australian Police representative side before taking in the NRL Grand Final at ANZ Stadium.
“Newcastle have a very strong domestic competition – one of the strongest in Australia,” Shaw said.
“It’s going to be a great challenge.”
