Rachael Toby produced a Player of the Match performance as Perth Kiwis broke their Women’s League Tag ANZAC Challenge duck, claiming a tense 12-10 win over Perth City.

Playing at fullback, Toby scored a pair of tries as the Kiwis snapped their six-game ANZAC losing streak.

“We had a mean game today and it was awesome from the start,” Toby said.

“We all played to our potential.”

After securing a comfortable 24-0 win in last year’s fixture, City got off to an ideal start as Elle Warren raced away to give her side a 6-0 lead after just 11 minutes.

The Kiwis weren’t going to go down without a fight, however, and hit back just three minutes later as Toby scored her first of the game as Caleb Reedy’s side pulled themselves within two points heading into the half-time break.

The Kiwis burst out of the blocks after the change of ends and soon hit the front as Kailey Thompson’s 40/20 set her side in strong field position.

From the following set, Thompson was again involved as her perfectly-weighted kick found Toby who dotted down for her second of the game just past the half-hour mark.

With a little under a quarter of an hour remaining, City reclaimed their lead as Amber Spencer crossed to put the Kiwis under the cosh.

With their backs against the wall and staring down the barrel of a seventh-straight ANZAC loss, the Kiwis broke the hearts of Gus Marshall and City as winger Bobbie-Lee Barker scored the match-winner with just six minutes left.
