U18’s keen to go one better in 2018

A year on from their second place finish at the Combined Affiliated States Championship, WA Under 18’s Team Manager Callan Gibson says his side are

“The boys are definitely keen to go one better,” he said.

A key element to get them there would be to not worry about the past and focus on what we have been preparing for.

“They are not only playing for themselves and WA they are also playing for a position in the CAS Schoolboys team which is a combined team of all states.”

Having taken on the role of Football Manager of the West Coast Pirates during the 2018 SG Ball Cup season, Gibson knows the group as well as anyone.

“We have fifteen players from the SG ball 2018 program, however, the remaining five players aren’t shy of giving it their all,” he said.

“I believe these young men are mentally and physically prepared for the carnival we have coming up.

“I’m looking forward to working with them as well as new faces in the rep program.”

WA get their campaign underway with a clash against a Northern Territory side featuring Pirates halfback Trent Wedding.

“I’ve kept in good contact with Trent. We both have some good banter about the game so it will be fun and competitive,” Gibson said.

WA then square off with South Australia on Day Two before taking on the reigning champions; Victoria, on Day Three.

Gibson says his side are wary of all of the teams and expects Victoria to be the toughest test.

“At this stage, all games pose a threat as each team is wanting a win over the three days, however, Victoria have been our strongest opposition to date,” he said.
