West Aussies Abroad #1: Reps, Trials and Nines

It’s the week before Auckland Nines and we’ve got plenty of news about our West Australian boys making a name for themselves over east.

Josh Benjamin was at the centre (literally) of the First Nations Goannas backline as they valiantly went down to the Newcastle Knights 52-12 at Hunter Stadium.

The Goanna’s and Newcastle Knights were taking part in the Festival of Indigenous Rugby League, which replaced the NRL all-stars match this year due to heavy fixturing after the introduction of the Dick Smith Auckland Nines.

Arlin Paki and Curtis Rona found themselves on either sides of the pitch in the Brisbane Broncos – North Queensland Cowboys trial, with Rona starting on the wing for the Cowboys whilst Paki started off the interchange wearing the number 22 jumper.

The Cowboys ran out 32-8 victors over the Broncos to gatecrash Jharal Yow Yeh’s homecoming.

Representing a combined Mudgee Dragons and Illawarra Cutters side, Tyrone Cranston took part in a trial against the St.George Illawarra Dragons.

The combined side were powerless to resist the NRL powerhouse who eventually ran out 60-16 winners.

And in Dick Smith Auckland Nines news Daniel Holdsworth will represent the Cronulla Sharks in the upcoming tournament after they announced their squad last week.
